HALE supports farmers in using trees as a practical part of livestock farming.
Through training, real farm examples and policy recommendations,
the project explores how agroforestry can improve animal welfare,
restore ecosystems and help farms adapt to climate
and economic pressures.
Livestock farmers are facing rising temperatures, pressure on natural resources, changing markets and growing expectations around animal welfare.
At the same time, many farms are looking for solutions that are realistic, profitable and rooted in everyday practice.
Agroforestry offers one of those solutions. By integrating trees and shrubs into livestock systems, farms can provide shade and shelter for animals, support biodiversity, improve soil health, diversify resources and make better use of land throughout the year.
HALE focuses on a part of agroforestry that is still too often overlooked: its direct contribution to animal welfare.
The project is aligned with the One Health approach, recognising that animal health, human wellbeing and ecosystem health are closely connected. This approach helps address animal welfare, land management and rural resilience in an integrated way.
HALE is designed first and foremost for farmers, especially women and young farmers who are shaping the future of European agriculture. It is also relevant for farm advisers, VET providers, agricultural schools, universities, agroforestry and animal welfare organisations, rural development actors and policymakers working on agriculture, environment, education and animal welfare.

HALE collects evidence, farm experiences and case studies showing how trees can contribute to better conditions for livestock, from shade and shelter to more diverse farm environments.

The project develops flexible and accessible learning materials for farmers, advisers and agroforestry advocates, with a strong focus on practical use.

HALE connects farmers, VET providers, academics and advisers so that agroforestry knowledge can move more easily between the field, the classroom and policy discussions.

The project highlights agroforestry as a modern,
viable and forward-looking approach to farming,
with particular attention to young and female farmers.

HALE brings together evidence and stakeholder input to support the integration of agroforestry, animal welfare and the One Health approach into relevant policy and training frameworks.
HALE brings together seven partners from five countries, combining expertise in agroforestry, animal welfare, sustainable agriculture, vocational education and training, research, EU project management and communication.
EURAF leads the project and brings strong European expertise in agroforestry, policy dialogue and stakeholder engagement.
OnProjects supports EU project management, communication, dissemination and exploitation activities, helping HALE reach its
target audiences and ensure the use of its results.
The Association brings the perspective of private farmers and supports the transfer
of HALE results to the
farming community.
The Czech Association for Agroforestry contributes
technical knowledge and
national experience in promoting agroforestry practices.
COAG Jaén connects HALE with farmers and livestock realities in Spain, supporting outreach, training and practical dissemination.
